5 Steps to a Healthy Self-Esteem

As a life coach, I've come across people who have low self-esteem in many areas of their lives - in their physical appearances, personalities, careers, the display of their gifts, skills, and talents - and so much more! It's no secret that at one point in my life I suffered from the lowest of low self-esteem and because of that, I made less than the best decisions for my life.

I thank God He brought me out of that low place and I'm now fully accepting and loving the woman I have become, but it was a process to get here. It didn't happen overnight. However, I learned that when we take a step in the right direction, God's grace will turn that one step into a huge leap if we allow Him to.

As I was thinking about what to blog about, I felt compelled to share with you at least five steps that will help you have healthy self-esteem. These have been tried and proven true in my own life and I'm sure they will do the same in your life.

1. Deal with your emotions and esteem about any negative words or acts that were spoken or done to you.

My low self-esteem was a result of how I responded to the sexual molestation I suffered for several years, and also the verbal and emotional abuse I went through from being a teen well into my adult life from the people I loved.

When I began to deal with and resolve my emotions regarding what happened and what was said, I was finally able to forgive and let it all go. Letting go was total healing for me. I realized my life wasn't defined by anyone no matter what they did or said; my life was defined by God and God alone.

2. Embrace who you are and what you have to offer.

Here's the thing... you are a gift from God sent to this world to be a blessing to someone. God put gifts, skills, and talents in you so you can, in turn, use them to bless others. No, you may not reach masses of people all over the world, but you can reach those in your household, your family as well as your community. Be perfectly okay with that and you'll find yourself confidently sharing the gift of you with others.

3. Work on improving the areas of your life you're not confident about.

This goes for both inner issues as well as outer. Perhaps you have a physical flaw like acne that you've become ashamed of. Simply do what's in your power to have better skin and trust Spirit with the rest. Maybe you are an extremely shy introvert and you want to become more assertive. Take a speaking class or do something that will pull you out of your shell. Just make sure what you do promotes healthy self-esteem and it will be something you look back at and see how you were able to overcome.

4. Don't compare yourself to others.

Here's the thing about comparing yourself to others... when you do this, you're telling yourself you're not enough. Not good enough, not pretty enough, not articulate enough, not skinny enough... you name it. Let me let you in on a little secret... you can never be someone else and they can never be you. Even if you're an identical twin, you're both two unique individuals made by God. YOU ARE ENOUGH JUST THE WAY YOU ARE! Accept that and work on being the best you that you can be.

5. Find something about you to be grateful for every single day.

Let me take this a step further and encourage you to not only find something about you to be grateful for each day but also look yourself in the mirror and express gratitude for whatever it is.

Ex: Today I am grateful for my smile. God uses my smile to brighten someone's day whenever I greet them. OR... Today I am grateful I have the gift of writing. I will use this gift to write a blog that will help someone to have healthy self-esteem. ;)

The life we all currently live is a direct result of our thoughts, words, beliefs, and level of self-love.
