10 Ways to Succeed with Your New Year's Resolutions

If you're like I was in the past, I would make New Year's Resolutions and after about a month or two, I fell way short and basically gave up on my goals. Then by June, I would try to pick them up again only to fail again a couple of months later. I didn't know what was missing and I felt bad for not keeping the promises I made to myself. Honestly, I felt like a failure and gave up making New Year's Resolutions altogether.

Then, I got a revelation that change can occur at any time in my life. I don't have to wait until the New Year, my birthday, or for a special event because my next breath is a new start. I only needed to learn some key principles to stick to in order to change my life and really adhere to them. So whether it was January 1st or May 23rd or even December 1st... if I wanted to change my life I could set new goals, apply the principles and see results.

As we're approaching the New Year, I thought it would be a great idea to share 10 principles to help you succeed in changing your life regardless of when you begin. These principles sound easy, but they require your hard work, heart-work, and your commitment to change. If you really want to stick to your resolutions, then I suggest you apply these tips (they are in no particular order):
  1. Don't try to do too much too fast. Pace yourself. Choose one or two goals and take small steps towards completion.
  2. Before diving in, spend time renewing your mind in the area you want to change. When your mind is prepared and ready, you'll better adhere to the changes you'd like to see.
  3. Believe in yourself. Believe you can change the desired area in your life. Affirm your beliefs daily!
  4. Be accountable. You can't do it on your own. Find a good, reliable person who can hold you accountable.
  5. Make sure your goals are relevant to YOU! Don't do them because everybody else is doing it or to keep up with others. Be true to yourself.
  6. Persevere! It ain't easy changing your life and often at the moment of change adversity will arise. Persevere! Don't give up no matter what may try to come against you.
  7. Give yourself grace. Practice self-forgiveness and self-compassion Be kind to yourself. Be patient, then move beyond your shortcomings and get back on track.
  8. Cultivate a strong willpower/self-control. Build your resistance to giving up or giving in. Train yourself daily to stick with it.
  9. Keep track of your progress. If you have to write it down, tweet it, post it, or take a picture keep track of what you're doing and how you're doing it. Also, celebrate your milestone moments.
  10. Be willing to make changes if a particular method doesn't work for you. What works for one person doesn't work for everyone else. So, do what works best for you.
