Many years ago I decided to invest time into myself apart from my daily prayer and meditation time. I started out spending a few minutes a day on personal development whether it was read/study a book, take an online class, attend a conference call, listen to audio books, or watch empowering videos on YouTube.
I eventually got up to at least two hours a day but life happened and my priorities changed drastically. So getting back to investing in me became very challenging. But I knew the benefits and as soon as I got settled into my new life, I began reinvesting in me. It took a lot of commitment on my part and even sacrificing certain things.
Now, I'm back to spending at least an hour a day on my personal development. I had to make myself a priority. And there are some days it's challenging with the demands of home, business and a relationship, but I do it anyway (even when I'm tired and just downright don't feel like it). But in the times when I absolutely can't for whatever reason, I feel a difference and quickly make my way back. If I'm going to be a parent, a life coach, a CEO... it requires me to continue to develop myself, to fill my cup until it overflows so I can be of better service to others (including you).
If you're reading this and you're struggling with your personal development:
- Maybe you feel you don't have time. You do have time. We all have 24 hours in a day. Simply make it if it's nothing but 15 minutes a day
- Maybe you feel you can't afford it. There are a ton of free resources - your local library, YouTube, LibriVox, free apps... you just need to search for what you want/need. (And www.YouTube.com/quelynntv)
- Maybe you feel like you don't have the support you need. You don't need support or motivation from others. If it's not available to you support and motivate yourself! Quit expecting from others what you should be giving to yourself in the first place.
- Maybe you feel you're not disciplined enough. It takes 21 days to create a new habit. Get a calendar and work on your personal development plan for 21 days in a row. Mark your calendar each day you complete it. Then when those 21 days are over go an additional 7 days, then another and another until you make that habit a lifestyle.
Notice, if you will, all these excuses involve feelings. You'll never do it if you base your personal development time on feelings. Feelings can sometimes hinder you if you let them drive your decision away from what you need. Investing in yourself is not difficult! It's only a matter of your commitment to your growth and development. You're worth it! Invest in yourself! Love yourself enough to empower you!
Here are a few more tips:
- Decide what you want to develop and focus on that for a while. Mind renewal takes times. If you want to develop in the area of finances focus on financial books, videos and classes for a period of time.
- Start small. Don't try to begin with two hours a day. Start small and work your way up to the maximum time you desire.
- Get a notepad and pen and take plenty of notes!
Side note for those who say you "struggle" with this: Don't consider it a "struggle"... we tend to resist what we consider a struggle whether we do it consciously or subconsciously. Affirm daily you have more than enough time, energy and resources for your personal development. You do it with grace and ease and your life is better and more fulfilled as a result. --- We have what we think, speak and believe.
