Making Tough Decisions

Tough decisions are... well... tough! There's no way to make them easier, and there's no way around them. They are the decisions we have to make regardless of the time period, who's involved and what's on the line. It's never easy making tough decisions, it takes up a lot of energy in all areas of your life and even after you've made the decision, you wonder if you did the right thing or not. But to experience a better life, sometimes making tough decisions is necessary.

If you want to achieve the greater good surrounding the situation you're involved in, here are a few tips that will help you make those tough decisions that won't come back to haunt your mind after you've decided.

1. Pray

Prayer is always necessary no matter what you're facing or what you're going through. Prayer is the key to life and through prayer, Holy Spirit will reveal to you what to do, how to do it and when to do it. He will also show you who to get involved with if the answers you're seeking involves people. The key to prayer is staying in the Word of God (your Bible), and to also take time to listen after you make your request.

2. Don't rush.

Unless you're in a bind and need to make a decision right away, don't. Give yourself time to think it over before deciding. This is the key time to pray and get quiet to hear what the Spirit of God says to you regarding the situation.

3. Don't make emotional decisions.

Most of the time when people make an emotional decision, they regret it later in life. So, give yourself time to settle your emotions first. Let your heart be still and then go back to the situation and revisit it from a healthier mental and emotional space.

4. Educate yourself.

Know all your options and know the consequences or rewards. Learn as much as you can about each option and then decide accordingly. Do your research. The Bible speaks of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:16, "She considers a field and buys it..." Consider first and decide later.

5. Consult with others.

A part of your research should include asking others who are more equipped to help you - professionals, mentors and even people who have "been there, done that." They can give you information from a different perspective than just research alone. They can share from human experience and well as from professional information.

6. Get your rest.

Make sure you're well rested before making a major decision. Sometimes fatigue and exhaustion play on both your mental and emotional capacity and if not rested, you'll make an irrational decision simply because you are too tired and don't "feel" like being bothered.

7. Eliminate distraction.

There can be a lot of distractions surrounding your life that can stop you from choosing the best in your current situation - people, social media, multitasking, and even life. So get all distractions out of your life so you can focus on the decision at hand.

8. Eliminate influences.

People can certainly be an influence in your life when it comes to decision-making, but other influences include - drugs, alcohol, unnecessary pressure, time, etc. Don't let anyone or anything influence you. Take your time to make the best decision for you. You don't want to later regret anything because you allowed someone or something to influence you.

The only exception to these keys is if your life is in danger. Get away and seek safety first. After that, consider these keys. Remember, above all else safety and prayer are essential.
