Never Thirst Again
Scripture - John 4:1-30, 39-42
Have you ever been so thirsty yet nothing you drank seemed to quench your thirst? Maybe you tried a little juice, but that didn't satisfy you so you drank a soda only to still be thirsty. Perhaps you had some tea or coffee, or even some milk but you remained thirsty. Then at last you drank a glass of water only to realize that was what you needed to satisfy your thirst all along.
In today's passage Jesus had an encounter with a woman who was very thirsty. Although He met her at a well drawing natural water, Jesus recognized she was thirsty on the inside - spiritually, emotionally, or perhaps she was lonely.
You see? She had drunk many things trying to satisfy her thirst - that is, she had been with many men (vs. 17-18), yet she was still not fulfilled. There was still a void in her life. Jesus recognized this and offered her the solution which was to drink of the living water and never thirst again (vs. 10-14). What was He talking about? He was talking about a relationship with God which could only come through belief in Him and through worship of the Father ( vs. 21-24).
A thirst is simply an unfulfilled desire that can only be satisfied through one source. So many of us are thirsty yet looking for satisfaction through various means; unfulfilled relationships, dead-end jobs, shopping/spending, sex, overeating, people pleasing... you name it. We try any and everything. Some will seem to satisfy our thirst but it will only do so temporarily, leaving us even thirstier than before. Others don't satisfy us at all but we continue to indulge hoping, wishing and even praying it will be fulfilling but it won't.
Nothing and no one can satisfy you like Jesus! This is why having a relationship with Him is so important. Through that relationship, He satisfies your life on many levels - spiritual, relational, emotional, and naturally. He truly is the living water who never runs dry. You can always go to Him. He will never say, "No, I can't help you." He is your refuge, your strength and your ever-present help both is an out of troubled times (Psalm 46:1). Not only that, but He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Thirsty? Try Jesus.
Journal
- In what area(s) of your life (if any) have you felt unsatisfied lately?
- What have you done on your own to fulfill that area(s) of your life?
- How has your way worked for you this far?
- Spend time today inviting Jesus to fulfill those voids in your life.
- A coaching moment: Use the power of your imagination by sitting quietly in your quiet space, close your eyes and imagine cool refreshing water washing over all areas of your life. See yourself in a particular situation then see it being cleansed by that water. Say, "Jesus, thank You for being my living water in _________________ (name the specific situation you envision). Because of You, I will never thirst again in this area of my life."
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, for they will be filled. -Matthew 5:6, HCSB
