I'm sure that at some point in our lives, we've experienced anger. If you haven't, just wait. You will one day. Anger is a part of life, and to be absolutely honest, there is nothing wrong with it. It's an emotion that stirs us up on the inside.
The issue becomes how do we deal with our anger. I believe as with any emotion, they can move you to take one of two types of action: inspired or uninspired.
Scripture tells us to, "Be angry and sin not." I find a lot of people struggle with the "sin not" portion because when you're at the boiling point of your anger, it can be challenging to walk away, keep quiet, or not seek revenge.
So how do you deal with anger then?
I have three SOULutions that can help you. These require an inner willingness to deal with anger as it comes up for you.
1. Do no-thing.
Don't lash out. In anger, you can do or say something that can bring more harm to a situation than good. As you feel anger come up, decide to do no-thing initially. This is not to deny what's happening, but to keep you from making matters worse.
2. Isolate yourself.
In other words, remove yourself from the person or situation that's inciting anger within you. When you're alone, go within and do the inner work. This means asking key questions like, "Why did this make me so angry?" This is also a great time to do mirror work by standing in front of the mirror and talking yourself through your feeling.
3. Express yourself in a healthy way.
Grab a pen and paper and write whatever the heck you want. Be honest about the situation, what you're feeling, etc. Let it all out. Oftentimes, this transfers some of your angry emotions into paper and relieves it from your heart, mind, and even your body. Once you're done writing your letter, rip it up.
I know that it can be very challenging to deal with anger, but I want to remind you that you can do all things through Christ who gives you the strength to do all things. This means putting on your Christ Mind and allowing the Spirit of God to move in you and through you to do all things, including dealing with anger.
