5 Ways to Balance Social Media

Social media, as with anything, can be a double-edged sword. It can be used in so many great ways: to share your life with family and friends, connect with people around the world, promote and run your business, get your message out to the masses. It can also be used in bad ways as well or just have a negative impact on your life if you do not use it properly. However, some of the negative impacts include: feeling inadequate because you compare your life with others or spending so much time on it that it takes away from your life - family, friends, and even your creativity (to name a few).

It can be easy to get sucked into the social media vortex if you're not too careful. Five minutes here and there can turn into 20, then 2 hours, and before you know it you've wasted a lot of precious time that could be used towards building your life, your business, spending time with your family, etc.

As with everything, you have to create balance. Again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with social media whatsoever. It's an amazing tool that can be used in very productive and useful ways. With that, I want to share with you five ways to balance social media:

1. Take a sabbatical or break from it.

There are times when we all need to take a break from social media. By break I mean, log off or uninstall it from our phone and computer and spend time away from it. Disconnect or shall I say unplug from the matrix. You need to become free from the attachments you've created to it.

Note: If you run a business on social media, automate your posts and perhaps check-in once a day with a small window of time.

2. Schedule time to engage.

I've literally sat in a restaurant and have seen an entire table of people on their cell phones rather than engaging with one another. Instead of being on social media all day, schedule time to engage with it.  You can also take this a step further and set a timer to only be on it for a few minutes at a time. In the same way you schedule important meetings and appointments, try scheduling your time on social media.

3. Unfollow accounts that make you feel anything less than good.

Have you ever followed a person or a page that left you feeling some kind of way? Like perhaps angry, frustrated, afraid, or even inadequate. Well guess what? You don't have to follow them. Unfollow, unsubscribe, or unfriend anything or anyone who makes you feel anything but whole, happy, and healthy.

Coupled with that, however, you must also deal with whatever negate e-motion that comes up for you.  It showed up for a deeper reason that you may not even realize. But that's another blog altogether.

4. Turn off your notifications.

Notification chimes will pull you in every time. What should take only 1 or 2 minutes to read and reply to can often turn into 15-30 and sometimes an hour if you've not too careful. If anything can claim your attention and time so effortlessly, then we have to ask ourselves why. Notifications are not always urgent matters. The virtual world can wait.

5. Spend more time doing life away from social media.

Life outside of social media for me is often less demanding and less stressful. Yep! Plus, you get time to make beautiful real-time connections with family, friends, and with life. This is also a great time to do your inner work and personal development. So pull away and redirect your energy and time to who and what matters most to you.
