5 Ways to Connect with Yourself in the Moment

The joys of life are all around us and even on the inside of us. However, we can become busy and consumed with everything outside of us that we can feel overwhelmed to the point that we lose ourselves in the moment and not take time to connect within. With the busyness of an everyday schedule, being a working mom, perhaps you're a wife or a student, or you're an entrepreneur working hard to keep your business going. It can consume you if you're not too careful. You can feel mentally, physically, and even emotionally weighed down.

The good news is, at any given moment you can "escape" the madness all around you and go within to connect with yourself. It doesn't take much time, only a willingness to disconnect from the outside and make the connection within you. It's very rewarding and can lift your spirits and even make you more productive in your daily tasks. Give yourself at least 5 minutes a few times a day to get grounded and centered within yourself by using some of the following tips:

1. Relax your entire body.

We hold so much tension in our bodies unaware when we're busy. We clutch our jaws, tighten our muscles, and even have shallow breathing. When you hold tension in your body, you lock up the flow of energy and can find it difficult to flow through your day and even the condition or situation you're in whether it's taking care of your family, or working on a new project at your job. Let go and relax. Give every part of your body your attention and begin relaxing it. Feel the release.

2. Focus on your breath.

Your breath is the Spirit of Life that flows through you. When you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or well... any emotion really, all you need to do is take time to connect with your breathing. Inhale and exhale slowly and deeply. You'll find that you'll begin to automatically relax physically, mentally, and even emotionally.

3. Listen within.

I've found that a lot of frustrations I feel are usually related to me not knowing what I need to do in any given situation. I've also learned to stop and listen within to seek the intuitive guidance to get me through it, help me manage it (and my emotions), or sometimes give me the courage to walk away or take a different approach. When we listen within, we connect to the Spirit of God Who is our guide through all things and the one who can calm our emotions.

4. Allow yourself to feel.

Speaking of emotions, another way to connect with yourself at the moment is to allow yourself to feel. Notice, I didn't say act on what you feel which is what most of us do when we react (re-act). But it is perfectly okay to allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling without resistance. When you do this, you'll find that your emotions can pass through you easier and this allows you to be free from bogged down feelings that keep you stuck and unproductive.

5. Give yourself a hug.

We don't do this enough. We often say we need a hug and look for it from someone else. Well, try giving yourself a hug in those moments. Wrap your own arms around you and feel the warmth of your own embrace. Tell yourself it's okay, or that you are amazing, or that you believe in yourself. Let me tell you... you will feel so much better. I often say that next to God's love self-love is the best love. So, love on yourself. Take a moment right now and give yourself a big hug. You deserve it!
